🥩 Competition Categories, Pricing & Participation Details

The Smoke Over Holston Barbecue Competition is open to all teams, from first-time competitors to experienced pitmasters. Teams may enter as many categories as they choose and may opt in to additional activities as outlined below.

Saturday Categories

  • Wings

  • Most Creative Dish

  • Mystery Item (optional)

  • New Category (to be announced)

Sunday Categories

  • Boston Butt

  • Chicken

  • Ribs

  • Brisket

🚫 The sauce category has been removed for 2026 and will be replaced with a new category to be announced.


💲 Entry Fees

  • $75 per team cooking spot

  • $25 per camper spot

  • $25 per category entry


🎁 Mystery Item Category (Optional)

  • $25 entry fee

  • 100% of entry fees go directly toward the Mystery Item cash prize

  • The Mystery Item will be provided by the competition

  • Item will be announced Friday at the competitors’ meeting

  • Judged and scored separately

  • Does NOT count toward the Grand Champion score


👥 People’s Choice (Optional)

  • Participation in People’s Choice is optional

  • Teams that opt in will provide samples to patrons wearing an official People’s Choice armband

  • Patrons vote for the team they feel deserves to win

  • Teams may choose what item they wish to serve as their sample

  • Sampling will take place on Saturday and Sunday


🍽️ Selling Food Plates & Sampling Requirements

  • Teams are welcome to sell food plates, as done by previous competitors

  • Participation in selling plates and People’s Choice is optional

  • All teams selling food or providing samples must strictly follow the health department protocols outlined in the official rules, including food handling, preparation, and serving requirements

  • Failure to follow health department protocols may result in disqualification from People’s Choice, suspension of food sales, or removal from the event


🏆 Grand Champion Scoring

  • The Grand Champion title is awarded to the team with the highest combined score

  • Scores from eight (8) official competition categories are totaled

  • The team with the highest overall score is named Grand Champion

  • Mystery Item scores are not included in Grand Champion scoring

We hold a comprehensive competitor meeting on Friday to go over all rules, clarify any specifics, . You can also find a detailed rulebook linked on our website's registration page.

How many people can be on a team?

While there's no strict limit on team size, most teams typically consist of 2-6 members to manage the cooking and presentation effectively. Ensure your team has enough hands for setup, cooking, and interacting with the public during People's Choice!

What should i bring to make bill cry?

Bring your spiciest, most flavorful sauce! It's become a beloved tradition to challenge Bill, one of our organizers, with the hottest sauce you've got. It's all in good fun and a great way to showcase your culinary bravery!

Do we interact with the community?

Absolutely! Our community loves engaging with the teams, learning about your techniques, and, of course, tasting your delicious barbecue. Be ready to hand out samples during the People's Choice event and share your passion with enthusiastic attendees.

What's the setup like for teams?

Teams are provided with a designated cooking space at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. Teams are responsible for bringing all cooking equipment, tents, and necessary supplies. Water will be provided for teams to fill their tanks; however, teams must supply their own power sources. Specific site dimensions and available utility access will be provided upon registration and reviewed during the Friday competitor meeting. Event security will be provided throughout the duration of the competition.

Is there anything else i should know before registering?

Beyond the competition, remember you're supporting the Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department. Be ready for a fun, community-focused weekend, and don't forget to check out the live music and vendor booths. Most importantly, come prepared to have a fantastic time!
